Tensile? Tinsel??

Friends,

We've been getting into the Holiday spirit with a whole of of Tinsel!

But it's different from the Tensile that we want to dicuss today. The Steel in the picture above has been subjected to a Tensile test.

Tensile Strength is something we all see on Material Test Reports (MTRs) everyday along with Yield Strength. They are somtimes required to meet certain job specs.

Do you know what they mean?

On MTRs you'll see them stated as Pounds Per Square Inch (PSI), Kilopounds Per Square Inch (KSI) or Pascals in the metric system, usually expressed as Mpa (millions of Pascals).

A very simple way to define these in non-scientific terms is:

Yield Strength - the amount of stress necessary to permanently deform material

Tensile Strength - the amount of stress necessary to pull a piece of material apart

We have put together a short video to help explain these terms and to put some real images to go along with them.

As always, we do appreciate your business and look forward to helping you in the final weeks of 2018 and continuing in the New Year!!

Sincerely,
