Spotting a Giant: Unusually Large Wide Flange Beam

Occasionally, we'll come across massive wide flange beams—far larger than typical sizes.

These giants, spanning 70 feet with heavy flanges and thick webs, are used in projects like large bridges, stadiums, and industrial plants. Their sheer size and weight make them impressive.


We got to see one of these large beams in our warehouse. These pictures might not do it justice but know that the beam on top is 8x40 (for scale). The Wide Flange Beam featured is a W40 x 264 lbs./ft, 70 feet long, and weighs over 18,000 pounds. It's one of the largest beams we've seen!


How is this possible? Answer: Nucor-Yamato Steel.

Founded in 1987 as a joint venture between Nucor Corporation and Yamato Kogyo, Nucor-Yamato Steel is the largest structural steel mill in the Western Hemisphere. Located in Blytheville, Arkansas, the mill produces over 2.5 million tons annually, including wide-flange beams, H-piling, sheet piling, I-beams, and channels.

The Yamato Process for large forged beams is a specialized steelmaking and forging process developed by Yamato Steel in Japan, known for producing high-quality structural beams and heavy sections. The process is distinguished by its precision forging, controlled rolling, and advanced cooling techniques to enhance mechanical properties and structural integrity.
