Ring Type Joint Flanges are Game-Changers for Sealing

October 08, 2024

A Ring Type Joint (RTJ) Flange is a flange with a machined groove in the face, where a gasket (usually made from soft iron or a similar material) is seated.

When sealing RTJ Flanges, the gasket compresses into the grooves on the flange faces. When the flanges are bolted together, the tightening draws the flanges closer, causing the gasket to deform and compress into the grooves on both flanges. This deformation ensures the gasket fills any groove imperfections. The continuous contact pressure prevents fluid or gas from leaking out of the joint.

RTJ Gasket

The gasket is made from softer metals to create an effective seal when compressed. Softer metals can plastically deform under pressure, filling surface irregularities in the flange faces.

While the flanges are reusable, the gasket is replaced during maintenance or disassembly. After being deformed to create the seal, it becomes a single-use component.

Where do we see RTJ Flanges?

RTJ Flanges are needed in applications where joint sealing must withstand high pressures and temperatures. The metal-to-metal seal is more reliable in these environments compared to traditional gaskets.

The primary industries using RTJ Flanges include:

  • Oil and Gas
  • Power Generation
  • Chemical Processing
  • Marine and Offshore
  • Aerospace
  • Subsea Systems
